Clown Nose Notes

Clowns have existed for a great many years because people have loved to laugh through all centuries and societies. Even in some of the most repressive monarchies of the past, clowns were (sometimes) afforded a great deal of leeway to make humorous jabs at the society they simultaneously found themselves a part of, yet still firmly on the outside looking in.

Clowns are known for a very distinct demeanor of projecting exaggerated silliness in order to entertain a crowd. This is pretty much universally known as clowns have held the distinction of being the original stand up comedians for over a thousand years. If such a longevity does not display an indication that the formula that clowning follows is a successful one, then who knows what is?

Part of the reason that clowning has survived for so long is the fact that certain conventions that make up a clown’s performance are rooted in the image and the costuming that the clown projects. Be it the white face paint or the floppy ears, certain humorous conventions are visually employed in order to help provide exaggerations that drive the clown’s routine home to the audience. One such overlooked convention is the use of the traditional red clown nose.

Some may feel that something as minor as a clown nose would have no bearing on the performance that the clown employs, but this would not be an accurate assessment. In order to drive the exaggerated mannerisms home, any little bit helps and the addition of the clown nose helps register this exaggeration with the audience. After all, if the use of a clown nose as a vital part of a costume wasn’t important, why would it continue to be employed as part of the costuming after all these years?

Never underestimate the importance of the fine details and never underestimate the role the light touch a clown nose may have on a performance.
